Preserving and promoting the art of printmaking.

UP23
The Contemporary Art Center (CAC) in Cincinnati hosted the “Power of Print” exhibit, showcasing works by five artists— Emma Wiersma, Abriljoanna Huerta, Charles Lewis, Christina Zorn, and Marvin Davis— who completed the Urban Printers Fellowship Program (UP23). This initiative, supported by a grant from the Ohio Arts Council, was organized by Tiger Lily Press (TLP), a nonprofit dedicated to promoting printmaking since 1978. The fellowship, starting In October 2023, introduced emerging artists from diverse mediums to printmaking techniques, including Linoleum Block, Silk Screen, and Dry Point. It featured workshops, TLP membership benefits, community outreach, and opportunities to exhibit their art. Fellows also received instruction on framing, installation, and storytelling through their work. Each artist brought their unique perspective and style, ranging from Marvin Davis’ wearable art inspired by cannabis culture to Christina Zorn’s wildlife-focused prints. Their works were exhibited at various venues, concluding with the CAC’s capstone event curated by Shawnee Turner.
Fellowship
The Urban Printers Fellowship (UP23), organized by Blanche Pringle Smith of Tiger Lily Press (TLP), was designed to introduce emerging artists to the art of printmaking. Supported by a grant from the Ohio Arts Council, the program ran from October 2023 through February 2025. The Urban Printers Fellowship has had a significant impact on both the participating artists and the broader community: Empowering Emerging Artists: The fellowship provided artists with access to professional-grade facilities, mentorship, and workshops, enabling them to develop new skills and expand their creative practices. This empowerment fosters artistic growth and confidence. Promoting Printmaking: By introducing diverse artists to printmaking techniques, the program helps preserve and promote this fine art form, ensuring its relevance in contemporary art. Community Engagement: Through outreach projects and exhibitions, the fellowship connects artists with the community, fostering appreciation for art and encouraging dialogue around the themes explored in their work. Diversity and Inclusion: The program emphasizes inclusivity by engaging artists from varied backgrounds and mediums, enriching the local art scene with diverse perspectives and stories. Cultural Enrichment: Exhibitions like “Power of Print” bring unique artistic expressions to the public, enhancing cultural offerings and inspiring audiences.
Highlights
Workshops and Guidance: The program began with an orientation to TLP’s facility, tools, and procedures. Led by TLP instructors, participants engaged in hands-on workshops and created pieces using each method for exhibitions and sales. Community Engagement: Fellows participated in outreach projects and shared their experiences in video interviews with Shawnee Turner from the Contemporary Art Center. Support for Artists: Benefits included an annual TLP membership, access to printmaking facilities, workshops, and mentorship opportunities. Artists received a modest stipend in the form of gift cards for art supplies and exhibition costs. Exhibitions: Fellows showcased their work at venues such as the Kennedy Heights Art Center, Pendleton Annex Gallery, and the capstone “Power of Print” exhibit at the Contemporary Art Center. The program emphasized collaboration, skill-building, and exposure to professional printmaking practices.
