Cincinnati Book Arts Society (CBAS) Exhibition Bookworks XVII

June 14 โ€“ September 4, 2016

The Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County:ย Main Atrium

800 Vine Street, Cincinnati, OH

Closely related to fine art printmaking are the book arts. The book arts explore contemporary aesthetic interpretations of the book as an art object, while preserving the traditional practices of the art of the book. Bookworks XVII is a Cincinnati Book Arts Society exhibit of one-of-a-kind, handmade books.

Every year the Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County reminds readers not only of the transformative power of books but also how books themselves can be transformed into art, with two exhibits: Bookworks and the Keith Kuhn Memorial Exhibit.

Several exhibitors are members of Tiger Lily Press. Artists participating in Bookworks XVII are: Anjali Alm-Basu, Patty Bertsch, Cecelia S. Chewning, Julia Chilcote, Jo Diamantes, Judy Dominic, Nancy Driesbach, Jessica Ebert, Maryjo Flamm-Miller, Carol Freid, Cody Goodin, Heather Hitchman, Paul Johnson, Janice Kagermeier, Marguerite Katchen, Lou Kroner, Anne Leader, Karen McGarry, Margaret Rhein, Anne Endress Skove, Jonpaul Smith, Veronica Sorcher, Diane Stemper, Judith Serling-Sturm, Carolyn Stewart, Salle Taft, Jeanne Taylor, Chris Voynovich, Fran Watson, and Carole Winters.

Judges awards of merit went to Paul Johnson, Judith Serling-Sturm and Chris Voynovich.

The exhibit includes altered books, pop-ups, cloth books, flag books, accordion books, handmade and paste papers, conceptual books, leather bindings, and traditional book structures exploring diverse topics such as family, history, nature, poetry, folk tales, photography, ephemera, journaling, and gun violence.

Get up-close and personal with the exhibit during the artist walk-through 2 p.m., Sunday, August 21.

The Keith Kuhn Memorial Exhibit is on display in conjunction with Bookworks XVII in cases near the Main Libraryโ€™s South Building elevators on the second and third floors, and in the Popular Library on the first floor. The exhibit showcases artistsโ€™ reimagined books from the Libraryโ€™s collection. The show is organized annually in the memory of former Library Services Director Keith Kuhn, who directed the Libraryโ€™s expansion of the collection.

The exhibits are open during Main Library hours: 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., Monday through Wednesday; 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Thursday through Saturday; and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., Sunday. The Main Library is located at 800 Vine St.

The exhibits continue until September 4, 2016.

The Cincinnati Book Arts Society is an all-volunteer non-profit organization devoted to the book arts, that is: the making of books from binding and printing to paper-making and artwork.
